Mark Levinstein is a trial lawyer whose practice goes beyond litigation matters and includes substantial legal counseling, conducting internal investigations and handling related litigation, advising for profit and non-profit Boards about corporate governance and legal compliance, and business transactional work. He concentrates in antitrust law, business litigation, professional, Olympic, and amateur sports, and representation of clients in crisis situations. He was identified as one of "Washington's Top Lawyers" by Washingtonian magazine (2006 and 2007), selected by his peers as one of The Best Lawyers in America (2007), and recognized by Chambers USA America's Leading Lawyers for Business (2007 and 2008). In more than twenty years at the law firm, he has handled litigation at the trial and appellate levels, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts. The legal subject matter has been broad, including antitrust, contract, employment discrimination, franchise, intellectual property, labor, RICO, sports, tort, unfair competition, and general commercial cases. He is recognized in four separate Marquis Who's Who publications - Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the World.

Mr. Levinstein has been one of the leaders of the Williams & Connolly LLP antitrust and business litigation practices since the mid-1980s. His antitrust practice has involved counseling and trial work for both plaintiffs and defendants, litigation and internal investigations, and criminal antitrust and civil matters. He has represented clients in a wide range of dealings with federal and state government antitrust enforcement agencies. He has worked with major corporations in such matters as preparing and implementing antitrust compliance programs, advising concerning the antitrust implications of possible business initiatives, investigating internal allegations of antitrust violations, and defending mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and other conduct when they are challenged by government enforcers or private parties. Mr. Levinstein's antitrust practice and experience has encompassed over sixty different industries, and he brings that knowledge of business, business planning, and business strategy to every new matter he handles for businesses and business people.

Mr. Levinstein also has a varied sports law practice, which includes representation of businesses and individuals involved in sports litigation, arbitration, negotiation, and business planning. Mr. Levinstein's sports-related clients have included amateur, Olympic, and professional athletes; players associations, sports teams, owners, leagues, and league properties organizations; sports associations; national governing bodies; sponsors; licensees; universities; college and professional coaches; scouts; sports agents; sports management companies and sports event producers; owners of sports facilities; new media and internet companies, and boxing managers and promoters. His practice has involved professional baseball, basketball, boxing, fastpitch softball, football, golf, hockey, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and volleyball, and many amateur, collegiate, and Olympic sports (including bobsled, boxing, cycling, equestrian, figure skating, gymnastics, skiing, swimming, tae kwon do, track and field, wrestling, and volleyball). Much of Mr. Levinstein's sports practice has involved controversy work - representing sports clients in anticipation of and in arbitration, litigation, and trial concerning sports-related disputes. However, he has also helped plan and form sports-related businesses, negotiated many sports-related agreements, advised clients concerning governance and ethics issues, negotiated professional sport Collective Bargaining Agreements, and negotiated personal service, internet, television, licensing, marketing, and endorsement agreements. He has counseled businesspeople concerning the formation, ownership, management, expansion, and marketing of professional sports leagues, and advised owners of professional sports teams (and other interested businesses) with respect to the purchase, sale, relocation, and financing of professional sports teams and other issues related to the financing and leasing of professional sports stadia and arenas. Representative current or former clients have included Andre Agassi, the Arena Football League Players, Lance Armstrong, the United States National Soccer Team Players, the owners of professional tennis tournaments, several NFL owners and/or teams (Rams, Patriots, Buccaneers, Eagles, Giants), Nancy Kerrigan, Ericsson Telecommunications, Norman "Boomer" Esiason, Patrick Ewing, Olympic aerial skier Stacey Blumer, swimmer Jessica Foschi, NBA Referee Jess Kersey, NFL Quarterback Club, Inc., NFL Properties, Inc., Philadelphia Eagles, Gabriella Sabatini, San Diego Padres, Royal and Ancient Golf Club or St. Andrews, Sportsline USA, Inc., various trading card companies, and the United States Olympic Committee.

Mr. Levinstein is a regular speaker and presenter of papers concerning issues related to antitrust law, sports law, corporate governance, and civil trial practice. For several years he served as Chairman of an annual sports law program in New York presented by Law Journal Seminars-Press. Since 1985, Mr. Levinstein has been an adjunct professor of law teaching classes in antitrust and sports law, first at the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University, then at the George Washington University National Law Center, and most recently at Georgetown University Law Center, and he is the co-author of a leading sports law casebook. He also serves as the Chair of the Board of Athletes for Hope, a non-profit organization that is a pro bono client of Williams & Connolly LLP.
