Internet and Intellectual Property

Williams & Connolly LLP advises many clients on various Internet and intellectual property issues, particularly Internet-related business matters. Our licensing, transactional, and advisory practice in this area complements a growing litigation practice in patent, trademark, and copyright protection.

For example, we have advised clients on the business, copyright, privacy, trade name, First Amendment, protection of Internet domain names, and other issues involved in setting up, providing content for, and maintaining Internet sites. We have represented clients in negotiations with web site designers and negotiated with Internet service providers (ISPs) to provide web sites for clients. On the other side, we have advised a major ISP on issues involved with entering into, interpreting, and terminating contracts with content providers.

Our traditional intellectual property practice includes licensing agreements, television and radio talent agreements, and joint ventures. We represent dozens of authors in negotiations to obtain production and reproduction rights to photographs, written works, and television and film works. Representative clients for whom we have drafted intellectual property agreements and provided advice on trademark and copyright matters include a wide range of trade groups and associations, industry leaders, and emerging Internet and telecommunications enterprises.
