Some examples of the firm's international arbitration work include the firm's successful representation of a private equity fund in an ICC arbitration sited in London and applying Indian law to the equity fund's claim for breach of shareholder and purchase agreements relating to an Indian cellular communications company. The firm also represented a Latin American country in an arbitration arising out of the collapse of its largest privately owned bank. Williams & Connolly lawyers arbitrated before an ICC panel an $800 million claim against several investment banks and others for intentional misconduct in ownership and oversight of the bank. The firm represented the United States Olympic Committee in an arbitration before the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland in a dispute over the award to Paul Hamm of the gold medal in gymnastics at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Williams & Connolly LLP lawyers successfully obtained arbitral awards after hearings for a leading French company in a dispute over ownership and operation of an oil refinery in Germany, and on behalf of an international energy company in a dispute over the sale of power plants in Thailand.
